draft / patch / weave

draft/patch/weave is an ongoing collaboration between artists Jacob Weinberg and Anna Bockrath. The project investigates connections between weaving and modular synthesis, as well as broader connections between digital and analog media. In both weaving and modular synthesis, binary information provides a fundamental basis for expression; it is essential to the pattern-based mechanizations of looms and synthesizers alike. In this project, binary information is used in a collaborative process to create a series of woven objects accompanied by sound compositions.

The process begins with a weaving draft, a set of visual instructions for producing woven cloth. When considered as a form of binary information, a weaving draft can be used to produce both patterned cloth and synthesized sound. Using a custom patch in the program Max/MSP, the weaving draft and the mechanical motions of the loom are processed in conjunction to control the synthesizer. The resulting weavings and sounds reflect a dialogic process as it unfolds over time.

Shuttle Service @ The Arts League

draft/patch/weave exhibited in Shuttle Service at The Arts League, Philadelphia. Jan 12 - Feb 29 2024.

Weaving Sound at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 7/22/23

As an artist-in-residence at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Anna Bockrath teamed with Jacob Weinberg to facilitate an interactive, public performance of draft/patch/weave. Participants created weavings on frame looms, then transformed their weavings into sound using a custom synthesizer program.

Velocities, 11/12/22

draft/patch/weave was a headlining performance for Shuttle Service, a community-based project led by Rachel Snack and Eugene Lew that spotlights and facilitates collective creation via weaving and sound/music making. The live performance was held at Velocities, a one-time special event hosted by Meantime at the former Blumenthal Brothers Chocolate Company in Philadelphia.

AIR @ Tiger Strikes Asteroid

draft/patch/weave was exhibited as part of a residency at Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia in January 2021. In addition to showcasing weavings and sound, a live performance was held as well as an interactive piece that allowed visitors to design weaving drafts and program the synthesizer in real-time.
