chance cloth

chance cloth is an ongoing collaboration with artist Jacob Weinberg. This project engages in the binary language of weaving drafts, visual instructions that serve as the basis for patterned woven cloth. Using a computer’s built-in random functions, patterns are generated within a custom drafting program in Max/MSP. Although these patterns appear disorderly when isolated on a screen, weaving them applies a sense of order as they are repeated in cloth. Coincidentally, the resulting textiles are reminiscent of traditional overshot weaving patterns – a continuation and expression of the historic connection between weaving and computing.
